Reed cutting for use in house building.

Broadland scenes. A swan swims on the river and there are shots from a moving boat of reed beds and general river views. Three men cut reeds with a sickle. There is a close-up shot of this showing the technique involved. The reeds are tied together and then piled up. A flat bottomed boat takes a way a stack of reeds. These are built into a reed stack on the bank. The second part of the film shows the reeds used in house building. In a modern equivalent to wattle and daub techniques, the reeds are made into a curtain and fastened to a wooden structure. There are exterior and interior shots of men fixing the curtain to this structure. A worker prepares the plaster and this is smoothed over the reed curtain. It is patterned whilst still wet. There are shots of the house half finished and when complete.

Background Information

This technique was used to build a music room onto a house at Rockland St. Mary. The room was later demolished because of damp.
