The sporting activities of King's Road County Junior School, Chelmsford.

A cricket lesson in progress. Boys learn the value of a good forward defensive stroke and practise in the nets. The voice of Jane Farrow, pupil, explains how she heard about the 'Seeing Sport' competition and decided to enter her school. There are shots of other activities, including a netball match. Jane Farrow is filmed at home writing a letter. Over a shot of the school, an adult male voice takes up the commentary. Children sing, and there is a shot of the Headteacher of Kings Road Junior School, Mervyn Jones who takes a boxing class. The boys' football team change their clothes in their pavilion. This was previously owned by Marconi. The first radio broadcast was made from it in 1922. There are scenes of a football match and the commentary explains that Kings Road County Junior School has won the mid-Essex Cup and Shield. There is a tug-of-war and film of the swimming pool. The instructor gives a lesson. This pool cost £750, £250 donated by Essex County Council and the rest raised by fund raising activities. The commentary explains that it heated by gas and the air around by radiant heating. This allows the pool to be used for large parts of the winter. The cycling touring club leave for an expedition. There is a scene of maypole dancing. In the final scene, at a school assembly, Jane Farrow holds the ATV trophy.

Background Information

Jane Farrow entered a competition in 1963 run by the Seeing Sport programme on ATV to nominate the school with the best achievement in sport. Jane nominated Kings Road School and her entry got through to the final three. On Monday, 4th November 1963 Jane, along with 29 children from the school, Head Teacher Mr. Jones, Mr. LG Rocker from the PTA and several teachers went along to the ATV television studio in Elstree for the final which was staged live on television. Jane's entry won, she was presented with a magnificent trophy and £100 prize money for the school. This money was used as the first instalment to pay for the original roofing for the swimming pool. Michael Ham was an ex-pupil of Kings Road School.
