Swimming and sightseeing combine with a glimpse of village life on a family holiday to Norfolk in the early 1930s.

Made on a family holiday to Trimingham, Norfolk in the early 1930s, the film presents a mix of holiday fun and village work. A well-dressed group walking near Roman Camp in the hills above Cromer is contrasted with harvesting at Trimingham with 'Ye Gotts'. Farmhands use forks to stack hay onto a horse-drawn cart, as two young farm boys stand nearby in tattered clothes. A man and woman bathe in the shallow sea and frolic on the beach, and a lively old lady - Grandma Gotts - appears in front of a messy barn. Crab fishermen carry their boat up the beach, where a man is once again shown bathing in the shallows.

Background Information

Judging from the intertitles referring to 'Ye Gotts' and 'Grandma Gotts', the repeated farm setting, the age of Grandma Gotts and the date of the film (1932), it seems safe to assume that this is the Gotts family referred to in the 1881 census, resident at White House Farm (See: http://www.gotts.org.uk/page79.html). It seems odd that relatively middle- to upper-middle class people would visit on a Norfolk farm in the 1930s, let alone expend so much film footage on it, which leads to an assumption that this film was made by one of the nine children (or grandchildren) of George and Emily (aka Grandma) Gotts, returning to their 'family' farm.
