The Essex Youth Orchestra in rehearsal.

The Essex Youth Orchestra showing them in rehearsal for a performance of the Overture to `Hansel and Gretel' by Humperdinck. Narrated by John Healey, a 16 year-old cellist with the orchestra. The members of the orchestra arrive by coach. All are under 21. After introductory scenes showing the orchestra playing together under the direction of conductor Raymond Leppard, the film shows the orchestra in section rehearsals. As we see the various rehearsals we learn of the background of some of the orchestra's members. John attends the Edwards Secondary Modern School in Romford. Other members attend grammar schools. Some are students at university returning to their home county for the vacation. Some are at music college. Some are in full time employment. The horn section is tutored by Ivor James. The cello section by Eleanor Warren. The violin tutor is Emanuel Herberts. This section also features the leader of the orchestra, Christopher Rowlands. The brass tutor is Donald Blakeston, himself a former member of the National Youth Orchestra. The clarinets by Claire King. Also featured are the violas, the double bass, the percussion section, the oboes, bassoons and flutes and piccolos. The film looks at the social side of the orchestra - young people play football, and practise their instruments. Featured is William Houghton, a trumpet soloist, who is about to embark on a career as a professional trumpeter. The participants are seen at a dance where a jazz band lays, formed of members of the orchestra. This section highlights the versatility of the musicians. John himself is the band's drummer. The bass player is a violinist in disguise. The saxophonist is a clarinettist in the orchestra and also plays a trumpet and a trombone.The last section of the film shows the full orchestra in rehearsal with Raymond Leppard.
