Bronze Week at Sheringham

Boys and Girls take part in activities for a week to achieve the bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Young people arrive at Sheringham Secondary School at the beginning of a week's residential training for the bronze award of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Girls are seen making up camp beds and this is followed by scenes shot in a classroom. For the adventure section the young people undertake a trial expedition to the far side of the school playing field to practice their skills in cooking, erecting tents and packing rucksacks. For the rescue and public service section a first aid class is conducted by a member of the St. John's Ambulance. For the pursuit (boys) and interest (girls) section boys in a woodwork class make their own canoe and girls practise stage make up for a drama class. Other boys go sea angling in a crab boat off Sheringham. The boat comes into shore and is hauled up the beach by tractor. The boys help by putting down rollers. They count the catch. The next section shows an even greater divergence between the expectations for girls and boys. For the fourth section of the award, the boys undertake a physical fitness or sports programme. They are seen exercising and taking part in athletics events. The girls undertake a Design For Living course which includes domestic science skills, personal grooming and poise.The final sequence follows a group of boys on their expedition proper. They stop at Roman Camp at Aylmerton where they take photographs and make notes about the wildlife before travelling onto Felbrigg Hall. Here they set up camp in the grounds.
