BBC Look East news item featuring G.P. Watts, an enthusiastic amateur radio operator and founder of Islands on the Air.

The report begins with what seems to be an ordinary home, except for the radio antennas on the roof. A sign in the window reveals the house as belonging to Geoff Watts, a radio and television engineer. Inside, Mr Watts is shown operating a long wave radio, surrounded by maps and other radio paraphernalia. Interviewed by the BBC correspondent, Mr Watts describes his interest in amateur radio as a way of hearing voices and stories from around the world. Rather than speaking himself, Watts prefers to listen to a wide range of broadcasts in the hope of hearing voices from every country and remote island in the world. Mr Watts is shown counting money and cheques, and operating a hand-cranked copying machine which duplicates his newsletter - The DX News Sheet - to be sent around the world. He explains the methods of communication and abbreviations used by amateur radio enthusiasts, claiming that his news sheet is bought by doctors and ambassadors.
