Haven Of Rest

1935 - 1945 , Lake District (Cumbria)

An edited home movie featuring the Neale family in the Lake District.

A family trip to the Lake District presented as an antidote to the unrelenting bustle of modern urban life. A busy street outside Ealing Broadway Tube Station and the frenzied pace of traffic on the streets and footpaths sets the scene in the busy city. A woman sits in her backyard, surrounded by travel books and asks her companion: 'Where can we go to be quiet?'. Opening the atlas in her lap, she stabs at a random page. A train departs the station and reveals her answer - 'Keswick' - followed by a panorama of Derwent Water and surrounds, settling on Moot Hall in Keswick town centre. Various activities are depicted, including trips to nearby Borrowdale, rock climbing, rowing, and rides on horse and cart, bus and motorcycle. A hike into the surrounding countryside takes the family to Catbells Fell, the cascades of Langstrath Valley, the Surprise View vantage point, Newland Valley, Ladore Falls, Bowder Stone, the Druid's Circle (aka Castlerigg Stone Circle) and the church of St John's in the Vale. The trip concludes with a coach journey to Grasmere, where the Neale family visit St Oswald's Church, Wordsworth's home at Dove Cottage and nearby Rydal Water.
