Arrival of Evacuees
1939 , Welwyn Garden City (Hertfordshire)
Cat no. 2472
The arrival and coordination of evacuees at the outbreak of World War Two.
A policeman stands guard as hundreds of young evacuees from London wait on the pavement in the centre of Welwyn Garden City. Nearby, a large group of women hold signs denoting different groups, ready for assembly. A brief shot shows residents digging a bomb shelter, as a group of men discuss the movement of the evacuees. A series of shots show the evacuees in some detail; boys and girls of all ages, each carrying a small suitcase and the regulation gas mask boxes, and many dressed in school uniform. Finally on their way, the evacuees leave the area in large groups, accompanied by stewards, nurses and nuns.
