Danger Signal

1935 , Derby (Derbyshire)

A young couple's struggle to deal with disability leads to a tragic end.

Amateur filmmaker, cinema historian and railway engineer H.A.V. Bulleid brings his professional life and passionate pastime together in a tragic tale of young love hindered by an incurable disability and the cruelty of society. Ted works as a fireman on a steam locomotive and is deeply in love with Emily, a beautiful young lady. But Emily has a disability, the result of a childhood accident which left her with a terrible limp. Constant pity from friends and the prying eyes of strangers drives a wedge between the pair, and Ted's confrontation with colleagues outside Emily's house leads to harsh words, and tragic consequences.

Man works ceaselessly to build the machine... So the machine is built. Machines to work the trains... "Step on it, Joe, she's due out in ten minutes." Ted Adams... A young fireman. "We've made a good job of that, - haven't I?" And one hour later - When the work of the day is over... When the leisure of evening has come... Then -- in a park by the city... Under the grey twilight sky... Under the arc of the heavens... Youth walks with his sweetheart. Ted's girl Emily was an incurable cripple. The only cloud in their happiness The finger of fate had pointed-- -- Eight years ago -- -- And the blow had been struck. "Hoy, - Ted --" "- coming to the pictures to-morrow with the girls?" Danger Signal / End of Part One Danger Signal / Part Two "You go on. I'll wait alone." "Oh - steady, Ted. You're going too fast." "Thinking about Ted's Emily. It's hard, her having that limp -" Sleep's fitful when the brain is ill at ease -- For instead of peace -- Comes all the turmoil of the day that's past. Grey dawn, after a restless night -- Ten Not ten... One hundred Not a hundred... Not a thousand... But ten thousand trains each day. Through a tumult of noise -- Through heat and endless work -- Man cannot escape his thoughts. "I can't." "I can't." "You can't." Loneliness... The fear of loneliness... The fear of being unwanted... Can poison life. "Poor Ted's having a tough time -" Danger Signal - End of Part Two Danger Signal - Part Three "Shall I see you, Ted, -" "- to-morrow as you go to work-?" "Hullo, Ted.
