BBC Look East report on the effect of a proposed national firefighters strike.

A trio of British armed forces 'Green Goddess' fire engines are called out of retirement as a pay dispute leads to a national firefighters strike across Britain. Speaking to BBC East correspondent Tony Scase, Labour MP for Ipswich, Ken Weetch, speaks of a 'potentially very ugly' strike, fearing that it might put lives at risk and result in 'public hysteria'. Weetch also discusses his 'peace plan', which he has presented to the Home Secretary in the hope of averting the strike with a 'straightforward wages deal'. At the headquarters of the Suffolk Fire Service in Ipswich, the county's chief fire officer Melville Williz talks about the precautions in place during the strike, with supplementary support given by the armed forces, and suggests ways to ensure the public are able to protect their lives and property. The report concludes with a vintage appliance, a 1929 Dennis Fire Engine, travelling through the streets of Ipswich.
