The Singing Postman
1967 , Norfolk (County)
Cat no. 756
A promotional film featuring Norfolk singer and songwriter Allan Smethurst - the Singing Postman.
Allan Smethurst's lyrics are sung in his distinctive Norfolk accent. They are performed throughout the film, sometimes illustrated with fantasy, mute live-action. Allan, in his postal uniform, bicycles along country lanes to his postal round in Lavenham. Back in his cottage, with basic recording technology, he records his famous hit, 'Have You Got a Light Boy'. At the local BBC radio studio in Norwich, Ralph Tuck plays the Singing Postman's tapes to enthusiastic listeners on his 'Wednesday Morning' programme. Scenes from the public and lounge bars at The Crown in Stowupland illustrate the song 'Dommies In The Bar'. Girlings bakery at Stowmarket features in the song 'I Can't Get A Nice Loaf Of Bread'. Finally, the fair at Mablethorpe provides the background for his first single, 'Roundabout'.
