Witness in Brass

1952 , Essex (County)

An insight into the art of brass rubbing.

The film begins with some examples of brasses. It gives a clear account of brass rubbing, illustrated by two boys making a brass rubbing under the watchful eye of the vicar at St. Mary's Church, Latton, Harlow. The boys use 'heel ball' and draughtsman's detail paper. In a slightly speeded up sequence, the rubbing emerges as the boys work. As well as the usual technique, the film shows how to turn a negative rubbing into a positive print. The film shows how rubbings can show an account of fashion through the ages and offers some examples of rubbings of famous people, including Henry Boucher, Earl of Essex and his wife, Isabella.
